“The Male Damselfly Speaks”—a finalist in the Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick’s 2012 Individual Poem competition—has been typeset by hand and reproduced on cotton rag paper in a limited edition of 50 copies. The broadsheet’s impress, carved by David Brewer of Fredericton’s Rabbittown Press, replicates the fly of the book’s cover.
A metrical form reclaimed by Canada’s P.K. Page (1916-2010) in Hologram: a Book of Glosas (London, ON: Brick Books, 1994), the glosa was invented by Spanish court poets of the late 14th c.
An epigrammatic 4-line cabeza introduces the theme of the poem; four 10-line stanzas—wherein the 6th, 9th, and 10th lines rhyme—explain or “gloss” the introduction. An excellent teaching tool for secondary and tertiary-level instructors, “The Male Damselfly Speaks” encompasses lines from Laurie Block’s “Pre-Nuptial” (Time Out of Mind. Lantzville, BC: Oolichan, 2006).
